We've watched many retailers across the country struggle recently in our down economy. Downtown Duluth has been no exception in dealing with some vacant storefronts. But, we have been among the exceptions when it comes to creatively recruiting new retail to the core of our community. Thanks to "Go Downtown, Grow Downtown, the Great Space Giveaway" we will be welcoming three new retailers to Superior Street. The trio assembled business plans and came out as winners in the Greater Downtown Council's contest, which offered free rent for one full year.
One of Duluth's greatest treasures again will be the focus of a celebration next month. Much to the excitement of residents and visitors, Duluth's Lakewalk continues to expand. Now, those districts that are linked by the waterfront trail are teaming up to share in celebrating the second annual Duluth Lakewalk Festival Sept. 10-11. Presented by the Greater Downtown Council and the Canal Park Business Association, this free event will offer activities along the Lakewalk from Canal Park to Lakeside/Lester Park.
Sometimes taking advantage of small opportunities can bring forth the greatest of rewards. Such was the case for our organization when we took on a little endeavor to spread some cheer last month in the Downtown on Cupid's big day: St. Valentine's Day. Members of the Duluth Downtown Waterfront District's Clean & Safe Team were armed with boxes of candy hearts with a box slogan that read "We LOVE having you in the Downtown Waterfront." Our mission was simple: Spread some extra kindness in the downtown and let our employees, residents and visitors know how much they are appreciated.
