Two congregations are hosting prominent biblical scholar Dr. David Rhoads, professor of New Testament emeritus from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, for free public speaking events Sept. 26-28. "Performing the Gospel" will take place 7-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Superior St. Rhoads will perform a portion of the Gospel of Mark and lead a discussion on the significance of the spoken word for the church today. Rhoads is also a passionate environmentalist.
A free training on cancer prevention and early detection is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2. Instructors are Gay Lynn Richards, RN MPH and Elizabeth Wilson-Lopp of the Minnesota Department of Health. Richards will talk about cancer and the importance of mammography and colorectal screenings. She is the regional coordinator for the Sage Program, which pays for mammograms and Pap tests for women who are uninsured or underinsured. Wilson-Lopp will share Motivational Interviewing techniques. Participants will receive flip charts to aid them in promoting cancer screenings.
The Duluth Community Family Resource Fair is 4-6 p.m on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Myers-Wilkins Elementary School, 1027 N. Eighth Ave. Families can learn about programs for housing, education, employment, health and mental health, building financial assets, child care and youth programs. The West Duluth Branch Library, 5830 Grand Ave., will host a free workshop on "Easy Ways to Improve Your Credit Score" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25. No registration is necessary. Workshop participants will learn how to read a credit report, what their rights are under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and fast ways to increase their credit score. Lutheran Social Services staff will break through the myths and mysteries of credit scores and share practical, free steps for building up scores.
"The Forgotten Theater of War During WWII" is a free presentation at Carmody Irish Pub & Brewing, 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25. In 1943, Richard "Dick" Kern served in the U.S. Army Air Force with the 436th Bombardment Squadron, 10th Air Force. He was a Staff Sergeant and tail gunner in a B-24J "Liberator" bomber and flew 300 combat flying hours with his crew. Richard will talk about his bombing missions in Burma and French Indochina in 1944, along with his time spent supplying gas to fighter strips in China for the Flying Tigers.
During the weekend of Sept. 19-21, Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2310 E. 4th St., will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its locally built, world renowned Jaeckel organ. On Friday at 7 p.m., Dr. Jesse Eschbach will play a recital of varied works. Dr. Eschbach teaches at the College of Music, University of North Texas and was a consultant to Pilgrim Church when the organ was designed and built. The recital will include works by Buxtehude, Bach, Couperin, Harlos, Alain, and Dupre. Tickets are $10, available at the door. On Sunday at 10 a.m., Dr.
The People's Climate March takes place in New York City on Sunday, Sept. 21. The event is to communicate widespread demand for action to world leaders who gather for the United Nations Climate Summit two days later, on Sept. 23. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to reduce pollution. Several congregations and regional faith teams have joined to organize a local version of the march. The Duluth Climate Hike will be a mile long around the Lake Superior Zoo, on the Superior Hiking Trail and Kingsbury Creek.
