A Memorial Day ceremony takes place 9 a.m. on Monday, May 29 at the Gary New Duluth Community Center, 801 101st Ave. W. Veterans from Riverside, Smithville, Morgan Park, Gary New Duluth, Fond du Lac and Oliver, Wis. will be honored. The Northland Memorial Day Parade in West Duluth dates back to 1871. At 10:30 a.m., parade units line up on 59th Avenue West between Raleigh Street and Grand Avenue. The parade begins around 12:30 p.m. No parking is allowed on Grand Avenue along the parade route. Motorists should be aware of detours and officers directing traffic.

The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad will hold its annual volunteer recruitment meeting 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 1 at the Superior Public Library, 1530 Tower Ave. The LS&M is the historic railroad which travels along the St Louis River through Duluth and Morgan Park. It follows part of the original rail line established into Duluth during the 1870s.

Lunch with the History People
In 1981 the Budgeteer (by then called the Duluth Budgeteer/Scenic City News, having purchased the latter paper from the Woodland Community Club in 1969) celebrated its 50th birthday. The paper employed 17 people in the office plus 250 carriers.
Bicycle Commuters are invited to stop by one of six bike commuter stations on Friday, May 19 from 6am to 8am for free coffee and breakfast snacks. The downtown Duluth station will be at MN Power Plaza and will also have free bike tune-ups and a DTA bus present for people to learn how to use the bike racks that are on all DTA buses. Bike to work day commuter stations occur annually on National Bike to Work Day, but new this year are satellite stations and participation of businesses in Duluth. Duluth is celebrating Arbor Day with a free family event on 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 20 at Duluth’s Main Library, 520 W. Superior St.
