It all started in 1950. The company was known as Lakehead Pipe Line Partners. The first portion of the pipeline crossed 990 miles from Redwater, Alberta, through Saskatchewan, Manitoba, North Dakota and Minnesota and concluded at our sister city of Superior, Wisconsin. It was a needed and bold initiative. Sixty-four years later, the need and the boldness continue. The company is now known as the Enbridge Pipeline System. The pipeline system exceeds 3,100 miles in length and includes multiple paths. The growth continues.
Three hundred of your neighbors recently gathered to begin the ambitious initiative necessary to boldly move our beloved community forward. It started with a candid discussion regarding the urgent need for additional housing in Duluth. Leaders from the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, the Duluth Housing Redevelopment Authority and the city of Duluth shared with us their ideas, their resources and their encouragement. Together, we learned what housing projects are underway and what new projects are being proposed in Duluth.
The Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce’s leadership stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in mining and in labor who are supporting PolyMet Mining. We reached this decision after first meeting with, and gaining perspective from, the leadership of Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. We also toured the PolyMet site in beautiful Hoyt Lakes prior to our decision. After doing so, the Chamber’s board of directors unanimously passed a resolution to fully support and publicly advocate for the PolyMet Mining initiative.
