Small need for At Large
After a number of recent newspaper articles regarding public servants and their actions, one has to ask:
Is it still necessary to have At Large positions on the School Board? With reductions in curriculum, facilities, faculty and staff, one wonders why the size of the school board wasn't affected by Johnson Controls' RED (REDuction) plan.
Is it still necessary to have At Large positions on the City Council? After all, Duluth hasn't reached its heydey population levels of the 1930s. Despite the council's size, the collective "creative thinking" powers of this council are questionable. Furthermore, I have a councilor for my district. Sadly, those extra positions on the council only dilute my representative's voting powers and increase the probability of a tax increase or fee.
And last, is it still necessary to have a position of state senator, when so much of his time is spent defining "growlers" and "refills" with the Minnesota Beer Association? Many taxpayers feel our money could be better spent.
