Community members will gather at Duluth City Hall at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, May 12 to partake in the sixth annual Mayor’s Bike Ride & Luncheon. The mayor and group will depart City Hall by bike at noon for the luncheon, which will take place at The Encounter Youth Center.
Mayor Larson will deliver her “State of Bicycling in Duluth” address, followed by keynote speaker Jason Hall of Slow Roll Detroit. Five years ago Hall and co-founder Mike MacKool were laid-off workers in Detroit. They started a weekly bike ride showcasing the positive things in their community. What started as a three person bike ride quickly evolved into one with thousands of riders every week.
Hall will also give a presentation, “Changing the World in Two Wheels,” at the Duluth DRAFT: a People for Bikes and Duluth Bikes meet-up, 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 11 at The Red Herring.
He will also lead a Slow Roll Duluth ride 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, starting at Michigan Street and 21st Avenue West. The ride will highlight the positive things in Lincoln Park including the Cross City Trail, Harrison Park, Lincoln Park Children and Families Collaborative, Northern Expressions Arts Collaborative, Duluth Art Institute and the Lincoln Park Craft Business District.
These events are part of Bus Bike Walk Duluth, a month-long series of events encouraging active transportation and accessibility for everyone of all ages and abilities in Duluth. Complete event listing can be found on the Facebook page.
