Transportation key for food banks

Transportation is a key element in food banking. As the only food bank in the region, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank depends on the transportation industry to ship nationally donated food to the Duluth facility. Once the product is here, Second Harvest dispatches national donations, as well as food it has secured regionally, to 120 non-profit program sites throughout Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin.

The Duluth-Superior Transportation Association (DSTA) members work jointly on efforts that support the wellness of transportation throughout the region and outlying areas. Second Harvest has benefitted from the transportation industry’s generosity as part of its affiliation with DSTA members, Halvor Lines Inc. and Sue Vinje Trucking. Both have provided free backhauling of its donated food from St. Paul to Duluth. Halvor Lines provides weekly backhauling which brings 1.3 million pounds of donated food to the food bank annually and saves the food bank over $23,000 in expense.

In addition to in-kind donations from members, DSTA will hold a fundraiser to raise support for Second Harvest. The DSTA will hold its “Fill a Truck, Feed a Family Food and Fund Drive” June 6-8.

To participate, simply drop off a monetary donation or non-perishable food items at the DSTA truck parked outside Cub Foods, 615 W. Central Entrance. Donations will be accepted all weekend, however volunteers will be on-site to offer assistance.

“This event is just another example of the transportation industry’s generosity and commitment to those in need,” said Shaye Moris, Second Harvest executive director. “We couldn’t be any happier to be affiliated.”

Shoppers will also have the opportunity to purchase a paper truck for just $1 when they check-out at Cub Foods June 5-10.

“The DSTA is pleased to have generous transportation business leaders and professionals, as well as other supporting industry professionals, within its membership donating time and resources through this wonderful event,” said Jay Baker, DSTA president. “There are many folks in our community including young children that need food this summer. We’re grateful to our community for its participation in this important and much needed food drive.”
