May is Bus Bike Walk Month
Bus Bike Walk Month is here with over 20 events taking place. This is a month-long celebration that brings together bicyclists, businesses, art hounds, outdoor enthusiasts, active commuters and families.
Favorite events from last year will be returning, including National Bike to Work Day on May 16 and the Mayor’s 3rd Annual Bike Ride and luncheon. This year is packed bike educational opportunities through COGGS, YMCA and MnDOT. There will be fun rides with Damage Board Shop, Twin Ports Cyclery and of course, Mayor Ness. Children will enjoy the Myers-Wilkins Bike Rodeo. Duluth Coffee Company is hosting a Gear Gallery, a display a local active transportation-themed artwork for the whole month.
“Demand for pedestrian and bicycle-friendly amenities continues to grow in Duluth. We’re working hard to meet the demand with new events, bicycle education courses and advocating for improved street and pathway infrastructure,” says Shawna Mullen Eardley, active transportation coordinator at the YMCA. “It’s not just residents supporting this movement, Duluth businesses are finding the value in supporting bike and ped projects too. From incentive programs encouraging employees to walk and bike to businesses using bikes as part of their deliveries, our business community is getting involved and excited.”
On May 29 there will be a celebration of eight local businesses who were awarded “Bicycle Friendly Business” designations through the League of American Cyclists. The event, hosted at Zeitgeist Arts Café, will highlight the innovative ways Duluth businesses are incorporating bicycling into their business models.
