Eight businesses honored as bicycle-friendly
Eight local businesses have been awarded Bicycle Friendly Business designations by the League of American Bicyclists. These are the first in Duluth to receive the award.
Businesses receiving a Silver Level award are the Duluth Area Family YMCA, Continental Ski and Bike, and Twin Ports Cyclery.
Businesses receiving a Bronze Level award are the Duluth Coffee Company, Barr Engineering Co., Aerostich, Ski Hut East and Ski Hut West. Clyde Iron Works received honorable mention.
Recipients were honored May 29 at a ceremony hosted by the Healthy Duluth Area Coalition.
Jill Chamberlin of Blue Cross Blue Shield Center for Prevention, headquartered in Eagan, was the keynote speaker. Blue Cross Blue Shield holds a silver level Bicycle Friendly Business designation and employs 4,100 people.
“Studies have demonstrated that the benefits of encouraging bicycling in the workplace and as a practical transportation option are numerous and include increased energy and productivity at work, decreased absenteeism and turnover, lower employer health care costs, increase in local business retail sales, increased number of customers and decreased parking costs,” said Shawna Mullen Eardley, who works as an active transportation coordinator with the Duluth Area Family YMCA.
