Duluth salutes Memorial Day
Several Memorial Day ceremonies will take place around Duluth on Monday, May 26.
The Gary-New Duluth Veterans Memorial ceremony begins 9 a.m. at the memorial’s original site, on the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Stowe Street. Mayor Don Ness and Duluth native General (Ret.) Tim Cossalter will be the keynote speakers. Chief Master Sergeant Mark Rukavina, 148th Air National Guard, will be the master of ceremonies.
The West Duluth Memorial parade starts 12:30 p.m. at 59th Avenue West and Grand Avenue. The procession turns onto 46th Avenue West before ending at the Denfeld parking lot. Line-up begins at 11 a.m.
Proctor’s annual Memorial Day Observance on Monday has a new time. It begins 9:30 a.m. at the Proctor Community Center. Deputy mayor Shawn McGovern, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps for nine years, will be the keynote speaker. The Proctor Community Band will perform shortly before the start of the ceremony. Proctor Area Churches Together will serve refreshments following the observance.

Lakewalk Korean War Memorial
There will be a service at the Korean War Memorial on the Lakewalk at 5 p.m. The Korean War Memorial is dedicated to the men and women of all branches of the military — the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. A candle will be lit in memory of those who have perished.
