The YWCA Duluth's 33rd Annual Mother's Day Walk/Run took place Saturday, May 13 at Clyde Iron Works. Events included an all-women timed 5k, a 2-mile walk for whole families, a kids’ fun run and a health and wellness-themed expo. Aurora Kothe of Duluth finished first in the 5k with a time of 21:35.
Betty Brasgala, an avid runner began the Mother’s Day Walk/Run. She saw the need for a women-only event in Duluth to inspire women to “get off the sidelines.” After three years, she affiliated the race with YWCA of Duluth.
Brasgala was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and died last year. The 5k race has been renamed “Betty’s Race” to promote breast cancer and women’s health awareness.
Proceeds from the event support YWCA Duluth’s programs: Young Mother’s Supportive Housing, Early Childhood Education Center, Girl Power! and Mentor Duluth.
