Lutheran-Catholic combined service

A Lutheran-Catholic worship service, open to the public, is planned for Sunday, Dec. 18, 3:00 p.m. by Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, hosted by St. Mary's at 325 E. Third Street in Duluth

The seven "O" Antiphons, from the beloved Advent hymn, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," form the structure of this service of lessons and carols for Advent. Each verse, originally written in Latin, evokes the Messiah under a different title derived from the Old Testament.

Organists, choirs, and readers from both congregations will participate, and Rev. David Carlson and Rev. Peter Muhich will co-preside. A free-will offering will benefit CHUM, and a light reception will follow.

CHUM Christmas Eve vigil

CHUM will remember and honor the lives of those in the CHUM community who have died this year — both those who have experienced homelessness, and those who have advocated on their behalf. This year 39 beloved brothers and sisters were called home to God in 2016. The 30 minute ecumenical vigil will include music, poetry, prayer and scripture, and an opportunity to contribute to CHUM's street outreach programs financially or through "gifts of warmth" (coats, boots, gloves, etc.). Participants will be invited to light candles and hold memorial signs. The vigil will be held at 12 p.m. Dec. 24 in front of City Hall, 411 W. First St.
